New York - the definitive testament

WHEN WE PRESENTED THE "NEW YORK" LUXURY LIMITED-EDITION TO THE WORLD, WE GOT ASKED BY MANY PEOPLE OVER MANY MONTHS, "WHICH CITY IS NEXT ON YOUR LIST?" AND THE ANSWER IS THAT AT THE TIME OF WRITING, THERE IS UNLIKELY TO EVER BE A NEXT ONE. IN SHORT, THERE IS NO OTHER PLACE LIKE NEW YORK AND NO OTHER CITY THAT COULD FILL ONE MILLION SQUARE CENTIMETRES WORTH OF PAGES PER UNIT.

(For the mathematically inclined, that's one billion centimetres worth of limited-edition that we've just published).

There's no other city that could consume that much resource and justify a business expending that much energy.

What drew us to it was the towering emotion that makes up the place. That emotion and that unbelievable New York Vertical. That sense that the city is higher than it is long. That claustrophobic sense of 24-hr drama, energy, power and even loss, all battling it out in one single place. ?Oz" as Pete Hamill described it, or more specifically, how his mother described it to him from Brooklyn Bridge one warm day in 1941.

For him and for millions of others, it will always be Oz. And finally, it would be negligent not to state the obvious about the towering work we've accomplished. This lovingly crafted luxurious tribute is a milestone work about a single city and a must-have for lovers of New York everywhere.

COLLECTING MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN ESTABLISHED INVESTMENT CLASS AND GLORIA PRESENT THREE VERSIONS OF 'NEW YORK', EACH FEATURING A UNIQUE ARRAY OF 16"x20" ARCHIVAL PRINTS FROM SOME OF THE GREATEST NAMES IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY.

COLUMBUS EDITION ARCHIVAL PRINTS - PHOTOGRAPHER BIOS

Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) was an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photography of New York City architecture and urban design of the 1930s. Upon seeing the city Abbott immediately saw the photographic potential of the city. Her work has provided a historical chronicle of many now-destroyed buildings and neighborhoods of Manhattan and New York's landscape. This was all guided by her belief that the camera deserved to document the 20th century.

Jacob Riis (1849-1914) is known for his dedication to using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the less fortunate in New York City, which was the subject of most of his prolific writings and photographic essays. Riis worked with middle-class and upper-class philanthropists to utilise private wealth to transform the slums into better places to live. As one of the first photographers to use flash, he is considered a pioneer in photography.

Weegee (1899-1968) was the pseudonym of Arthur Fellig, an American photographer and photojournalist, known for his stark black and white street photography. He is best known as a candid news photographer whose shots documented street life in New York City. Weegee worked mostly at night; he listened closely to broadcasts and often beat authorities to the scene. His photos of crime scenes, car-wreck victims in pools of their own blood, overcrowded urban beaches and various grotesques are still shocking.

Jerry Schatzberg (b. 1927) has been published in Vogue, McCall's, Esquire, Glamour, and Life in the 1960's and captured intimate portraits of the generation's most notable artists, celebrities and thinkers (from Bob Dylan to Robert Rauschenberg). In the 1970s he explored the medium of film and participated in the renaissance of American cinema, directing films such as: Puzzle of a Downfall Child, The Panic in Needle Park, Scarecrow.

Evelyn Hofer (b. 1922) was born in Germany during the Nazi regime and was tutored under two Swiss photographers, which occasioned the start of her quietly seminal career. Her long career includes early fashion shoots for Harper's Bazaar, books of photographs taken in Italy and Spain, and portraits and interiors for magazines such as Vogue and House and Garden. Her photographs are included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Houston Museum of Fine Art, and David Rockefeller, Jr.

INSIDE THERE IS HISTORIC AND NEWLY-COMMISSIONED WRITING FROM SOME OF THE KEY JOURNALISTS AND WRITERS IN NEW YORK CULTURE, INCLUDING RIC BURNS, TOM WOLFE, GAY TALESE, PETE HAMILL, JOHN UPDIKE, E B WHITE, MICHAEL KANTOR, DAVID REMNICK, DAVE ANDERSON AND MANY MORE.

The book contains the best-of-the-best archival and modern photography from 75 extraordinary photographers and writers who epitomise the greatest of New York's creative talent.'
